Volanea vs Amazon SES · updated October 2026
Amazon SES delivery. Without the plumbing.
Volanea is built on Amazon SES, so this isn't a fight over delivery — the mail goes out over the same infrastructure. The question is how much of the rest you want to build and run yourself.
The short version
SES is the cheapest serious way to send email: $0.10 per 1,000, so 100,000 emails costs about $10. If you have engineers who will wire up DNS records, configuration sets, SNS or EventBridge for bounces and complaints, a suppression list, templates and a contact store — and keep it all running — nothing beats it on price.
Volanea is that work, done. Domains are verified with SPF, DKIM and DMARC for you; there's no sandbox request before you can email real people; bounces and complaints are handled and suppressed automatically; and you get templates with a visual editor, campaigns, event-triggered automation, segments, signed webhooks, an MCP server and a reputation guard that slows sending before a bad list hurts your domain. You pay for that in the price per email: $20 for 50,000 versus about $5 on SES.
Amazon Simple Email Service is AWS's raw sending infrastructure — the cheapest way to send email at volume, and the engine Volanea itself sends through.
Side by side
At a glance.
| Volanea | Amazon SES | |
|---|---|---|
| Sending infrastructure | Amazon SES | Amazon SES |
| Price per 1,000 emails | Flat tiers — $5 for 7,500, $20 for 50,000, $149 for 200,000 | $0.10 |
| Free tier | 1,000/mo, every month | 3,000/mo for your first 12 months |
| Sandbox before real sends | No — send to anyone once your domain is verified | Yes — request production access first |
| Domain setup (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) | Guided, checked automatically | You publish and monitor the records |
| Bounce & complaint handling | Automatic suppression | Build it with SNS or EventBridge |
| Templates | Visual editor and versioned HTML | API-only templates |

The math
What a month actually costs.
| You send | Volanea | Amazon SES |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $0 (free tier) | $0 (first 12 months), then $0.10 |
| 10,000 | $20 (Growth) | ~$1 |
| 50,000 | $20 (Growth) | ~$5 |
| 100,000 | $149 (Scale — covers up to 200,000) | ~$10 |
| 200,000 | $149 (Scale) | ~$20 |
On raw sending SES wins at every volume — it's the wholesale price Volanea pays too. The difference is everything around the send: the engineering time to build bounce handling, suppression, templates, a contact store, campaign tooling and monitoring, and to keep it running. If that time is cheaper than the gap above, use SES directly; if not, Volanea is SES with the work done.
Choose Volanea if
- You want to send this week, not after building DNS, event pipelines and a suppression list first.
- You need campaigns, automation or segments alongside transactional email.
- You'd rather your AI coding agent set up email through Volanea's MCP server than hand-wire AWS.
Choose Amazon SES if
- You send millions of emails a month and the per-email price dominates everything else.
- You already run on AWS with engineers who can build and own the surrounding pieces.
- You need dedicated IPs or deep AWS integration (IAM, VPC endpoints, CloudWatch).
No hard feelings — the right tool is the one that fits. This page stays honest so you can trust the rest of it.
Questions
Asked before switching.
Does Volanea use Amazon SES?
Yes — every email Volanea sends goes out over Amazon SES. Volanea adds the parts SES leaves to you: domain setup, templates, campaigns, automation, contacts, webhooks, bounce and complaint handling, and a reputation guard.
Why not just use SES directly?
If you have the engineering time, you should — it's cheaper per email. Teams pick Volanea when building and maintaining bounce handling, suppression, templates, a contact store and campaign tooling around SES would cost more than the difference.
Do I need to request SES production access with Volanea?
No. Volanea's sending account is already out of the SES sandbox; you verify your own domain and can email real recipients straight away, within your plan's limits.
